300th Anniversary Festivities in Rheinland Pfalz May 2009

To mark the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the Palatines in Ireland, a small group of their descendants from Ireland returned to the tranquil village of Assenheim, in the heart of the ancestral homeland - Rheinland Pfalz.

Activities commenced with a gathering of both locals and visitors in the Rathaus (town hall). Dr. Roland Paul of the Institute for Palatine History and Folklore in Kaiserslautern gave a lecture on Palatine emigration. A group of traditional Irish musicians who had travelled to the Palatinate with the Irish contingent took to centre stage with an assortment of Irish ballads and tunes.

The festivities continued on the following day, Saturday, with a banquet in Assenheim’s community centre.

On Sunday there was a street parade in the region to celebrate the village of Roedersheim's one thousand year-old history.
