GERMAN CHRISTMAS CRAFT DEMONSTRATION
24th November 2011
The Irish Palatine Association has invited Doris Spychalski from
Assenheim in the German Palatinate to demonstrate the old German custom of hand crafting Christmas decorations. The event will take place at the Inis Cuis Sheltered Housing Complex in Rathkeale on Thursday 24th November at 8.00pm. This step-by-step demonstration will include the making of straw ornaments to hang on the tree and the baking of Christmas cookies. Doris tells us that each Christmas the tree in the Church in her home village is decorated with over 120 ornamental items, all handcrafted by her.
Doris’s family has lived in Assenheim prior to the exodus of the Palatines to Ireland in 1709. One of her ancestors signed the document that gave Christopher Switzer head of one of those Irish Palatine families permission to leave in 1709. Doris has three children and two grandchildren and is involved with her local sports club, cultural association, church and a political party. She has spearheaded many projects including the compilation and publication of two books. One on traditional Palatine recipes and the second on traditional Palatine cooking. An English edition of Traditional Palatine Cooking will be available for sale on the night as well as some of her handcrafted items.
